Hey Richard, love the pictures brother and yes, I am tired of social medias and the way they work. They keep sucking our energy of creativity without much appreciation. Likes may push me out the door to take more photos but won't make me better photographer, I am just looking to get those pictures that get me more likes, very soon my feed becomes as boring as a Saturday in the office. What we all need is gentle criticism not likes! Foto, it is instagram without ads and video crap but buggy!
Ali, it's great to read your comment : ) I agree with you on the point you make around likes - motivates you to take photos but does it improve your photography? I think there is a slow "awakening" towards the folly of social media.
It was social media for a small time - there's not much which is social about it now. It's a battle for attention with people doing a variety of things to get their product in front of your eyes.
now depends how you define good. at about 4 months after instagram appeared on the market, i opened an account which lasted 3 month as at the time the app was full of spams, fake accounts and all sorts. never went back to it. when michael made the beta version of "foto" public, i joined. the app is ads free, no spam, nothing silly or annoying. and it is simple to use, user friendly, great interface. that is what i liked, the simplicity. oh, it has lots more options and features for paid subscribers. what i didn't like was the feeling of instagram, the fact (at least that was my perception) that everybody treats the app like instagram. nothing wrong with the app, but it is not for me, i can live very happy without so i closed the account.
Another one to consider is Cara - another photo-sharing site, aimed at creatives, but it applies Glaze to all your images when you upload them, which is invisible to the human eye, but scrambles the image for AI LLMs.
…something must have been in the water this week ;)…love the streetlight photo and you already know my thoughts on it all so won’t reiterate but to say social media for far too many of us is a necessary evil…that it is evil bares no issue…we have no choice but to use it for some professions, arts, etc…i am to stay grounded while optimistic that i need be eaten by their machines either…great work always Richard…
if you are looking for an alternative to instagram, try "foto" by michael howard, you can find michael here on substack.
thank you for the suggestion : ) wishing you a great Sunday
Have you used this “Foto alternative? I keep seeing it here and wonder if it’s good?

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. I don’t think I need another Instagram in that case.
